Comprehensive Proposal Development from Start to Finish

Preparing and submitting a grant application is a multi-step process that involves many people. This session will describe the components and purposes of typical grant applications, timelines and responsibilities for preparing successful proposals, and the various submission processes used by public and private grant agencies. Participants will learn the importance of a literature review for grant proposals and the differences between grant proposals and academic publications. Handout materials will include a chart of proposal components, examples of timelines, budget narratives, abstracts, and a four-point checklist to review grant applications before submission to assure that the application is complete and compliant with guidelines.

Institute of Educational Sciences (IES) and the U.S. Department of Education

This session will present specific and practical information on the purpose of the U.S. Department of Education and its many diversified programs, such as FIPSE; GAANN; international education and foreign language programs, including travel opportunities; as well as the Institute of Education Sciences. Especially for new applicants, information also will be presented on ED proposal formats and abstracts, and a brief review of the ED review process.

NSF – Questions and Answers

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is a major supporter of basic science research and science education, offering opportunities via its many directorates and their programs. Principal investigators can improve their chances of funding with a fuller understanding of how NSF is organized, performs its functions, and interacts with the academic community. This session offers an opportunity to ask questions about NSF programs or questions that remained unanswered from the recent NSF conference in Evanston, IL.

Developing Large Scale Collaborative Grants


This session will focus on preparing competitive large-scale collaborative grant proposals, which differ significantly from individual research grants. In addition to describing typical proposal components, the session will present strategies for planning and organizing research teams, assigning responsibilities for developing the proposal narrative and budget, editing the final proposal, and producing and submitting the final proposal package. Audience participation and questions are highly encouraged.

Inside the National Endowment for the Humanities

NEH grants support a wide range of humanities activities through different divisions and offices. This session will provide an overview of these different activities and the divisions and offices that sponsor them, especially the Division of Education Programs, Division of Public Programs, and the Division of Research Programs. Participants will learn strategies for effective proposal development for each of these programs and how NEH proposals are reviewed. Handouts will include examples of NEH abstracts and proposals for discussion. Audience participation and questions are highly encouraged.
